Lachen Monastery

Known locally as Lachen Ngodub Choling Gonpa, Lachen Monastery is an important Buddhist monastery and part of the cultural heritage of Lachen village.

Built in 1858, the monastery follows the Nyingma tradition of Tibetan Buddhism and continues to serve the local community today.

A BRIEF HISTORY

From a Small Hermitage to an Important Monastery

The monastery's history began with Lama Karchen Dorje Drak, who established a small hut at the site. Over time, the structure developed into a monastery and became associated with the Lachen Gomchen tradition.

The monastery was later reconstructed, including a major rebuilding in 1977 with assistance from the Government of Sikkim. Today, it remains one of the recognised monasteries of North Sikkim.

THE NYINGMA TRADITION

Lachen Monastery follows the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism, one of the major traditions of Tibetan Buddhism.

The monastery continues to function as a religious centre for the Lachen community, with monks conducting religious ceremonies throughout the year.

WHAT CAN YOU SEE?

The monastery has a peaceful mountain setting and traditional Buddhist features.

Among its notable religious objects are a stone associated with the Kham Gomchen and a stone shaped like a traditional vase of longevity (Tshebum), regarded as a religious treasure.

The monastery also holds major religious ceremonies and an annual mask dance, which is an important cultural event for the local community.
