How to Reach Lachen, North Sikkim

Planning a trip to Lachen? Find out how to reach the village from Gangtok, NJP or Bagdogra, what transport options are available, and what to know about permits, mountain roads and travel conditions.

Reaching Lachen Is Part of the Journey

Lachen is a mountain village in North Sikkim and an important base for travellers continuing towards destinations such as Gurudongmar Lake and Thangu.

For most travellers, the journey to Lachen begins in Gangtok and continues north through Mangan and Chungthang.

Unlike a typical city journey, travelling to Lachen requires some planning. Mountain weather, road conditions, permits and local travel restrictions can affect the journey, so it is worth checking the latest information before setting out.

THE ROUTE TO LACHEN

Gangtok → Mangan → Chungthang → Lachen

The main road journey from Gangtok to Lachen follows the North Sikkim route through the Teesta valley.

Gangtok

Mangan

Chungthang

Lachen

Chungthang is particularly important because it is the major junction where the North Sikkim road divides towards Lachen and Lachung.

From Chungthang, the Lachen route continues north towards the higher mountain areas.

How far is Lachen from Gangtok?

Lachen is approximately 120 km from Gangtok by road, although the distance alone does not tell you how long the journey will take.

Mountain roads are affected by:

  • Weather

  • Road conditions

  • Traffic

  • Temporary restrictions

  • Road restoration work

  • Stops and local travel arrangements

For that reason, it is better to allow a full travel day rather than planning around a precise driving time.

HOW TO TRAVEL TO LACHEN

By Local Taxi

For most travellers, a local taxi or tourist vehicle is the most practical way to reach Lachen.

Depending on your group and itinerary, options may include:

  • Shared tourist vehicles

  • Private taxis

  • Vehicles arranged through local travel operators

  • North Sikkim tour packages

A private vehicle gives you greater flexibility, while shared transportation can be more economical for smaller groups.

Because North Sikkim travel involves permit requirements and restricted areas, it is sensible to arrange your transport and permit requirements together.

CHUNGTHANG: THE KEY JUNCTION

Where the Route Divides

Chungthang is one of the most important points on the journey through North Sikkim.

From Chungthang, the routes continue towards two major tourism areas:

Lachen
→ Gurudongmar Lake, Thangu and northern high-altitude areas

Lachung
→ Yumthang Valley and Yumesamdong / Zero Point

This is why you will often see Chungthang mentioned when planning either a Lachen or Lachung itinerary.

CAN YOU DRIVE YOUR OWN CAR TO LACHEN?

This depends on the current rules governing vehicles, permits and access to the protected areas.

If you are planning to use a private vehicle, check the latest requirements before travelling.

For motorcycles entering Protected Area Permit areas, Sikkim Tourism currently specifies a minimum engine capacity of 150 cc, along with required vehicle and rider documentation.

For visitors unfamiliar with the region, arranging transport through an authorised or registered local operator can make the logistics considerably easier.

ROAD CONDITIONS TO LACHEN

This is one of the most important things to understand about travelling to Lachen.

The Chungthang–Lachen road is a strategically important mountain route, and its condition can change following landslides, heavy rain, flooding or other mountain events.

In February 2026, the Border Roads Organisation announced restoration of the Chungthang–Lachen axis after extensive post-disaster reconstruction, including multiple bridges, landslide clearance and road formation work.

However, the route experienced another major disruption in April 2026, and restoration work at Taram Chu was still being monitored in July 2026.

This illustrates why travellers should never rely on an old road-status article when planning a Lachen trip.

Before leaving, check:

Current road status
Permit status
Weather conditions
Vehicle availability
Local travel restrictions

The Government of Sikkim maintains road-condition information, although conditions can change rapidly during bad weather.

FROM BAGDOGRA AIRPORT TO LACHEN

Lachen has no airport.

Travellers arriving by air generally use Bagdogra Airport and then continue by road.

A practical itinerary is:

Bagdogra Airport → Gangtok → Lachen

Rather than trying to travel directly from Bagdogra to Lachen in one long journey, many travellers spend time in Gangtok before continuing north.

This also gives you an opportunity to confirm your vehicle, permits and North Sikkim travel arrangements.

FROM NJP TO LACHEN

There is no railway station in Lachen.

The nearest major railway connection is New Jalpaiguri (NJP).

The journey can be planned as:

NJP → Gangtok → Lachen

NJP is useful for travellers arriving by train from other parts of India, while Bagdogra serves travellers arriving by air.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO REACH LACHEN?

There is no reliable single travel time that we recommend visitors plan around.

Although the road distance from Gangtok is around 120 km, mountain conditions can significantly affect the journey.

A better approach is to treat the journey as a full-day transfer and leave sufficient buffer for delays.

This is particularly important during:

  • Monsoon

  • Heavy snowfall

  • Road restoration periods

  • Landslide-prone conditions

  • Temporary traffic restrictions

WHEN SHOULD YOU TRAVEL TO LACHEN?

Plan Around the Conditions, Not Just the Calendar

The best time for your journey depends on what you want to experience and the current accessibility of North Sikkim.

Before travelling, consider:

  • Weather

  • Road conditions

  • Permit availability

  • Your planned attractions

  • Seasonal accessibility

Even during generally favourable travel periods, mountain conditions can change quickly.
