This depends on the current rules governing vehicles, permits and access to the protected areas.

For motorcycles entering Protected Area Permit areas, Sikkim Tourism currently specifies a minimum engine capacity of 150 cc, along with required vehicle and rider documentation.

ROAD CONDITIONS TO LACHEN

The Chungthang–Lachen road is a strategically important mountain route, and its condition can change following landslides, heavy rain, flooding or other mountain events.

In February 2026, the Border Roads Organisation announced restoration of the Chungthang–Lachen axis after extensive post-disaster reconstruction, including multiple bridges, landslide clearance and road formation work.

However, the route experienced another major disruption in April 2026, and restoration work at Taram Chu was still being monitored in July 2026.

This illustrates why travellers should never rely on an old road-status article when planning a Lachen trip.

FROM NJP TO LACHEN

There is no railway station in Lachen.

The nearest major railway connection is New Jalpaiguri (NJP).

NJP → Gangtok → Lachen
